Siriraj medical museum, Bangkok, the body of serial killer Si-Oui and Chulalongkorn university museum of bodies exhibit

A while back I visited the Chulalongkorn university medical museum in Bangkok, Thailand.
As you can see in my photos below they had a lot of skeletons and wet specimens of both humans and animals.

That was a while back, and I haven't been since, but after googling "medical museums" in the hope of finding another interesting place to spend a day I saw that they had a new exhibit of amazing plastinated human bodies on display.

I found these images on the official website for the university and also on another bloggers page (He has a really informative post regarding the history and process which I urge you to check out if you want to know more

I also visited a few similar places including the Siriraj medical museum.
The Siriraj Medical Museum is often treated as a macabre stop for tourists bored with temples and shopping malls, and is a gruesomely fascinating formaldehyde pickled nightmare world for the curious.
It includes a gallery of suicide (photos of death and a description of the cause), an exhibit of Siamese twins in jars, forensic evidence from crimes, cadavers cut in half and heads in jars.
Although extremely valuable and educational for students in the medical field, it is not for the faint of heart.

The hospital is also home to the preserved body of Chinese immigrant and serial child killer cannibal “Si-oui” (or Si Ouey) who stands tanned and varnished in a big glass display box, staring out at visitors with his sunken hollow eyes.

(Pic: trip adviser)

Si-oui (often spelled Si Ouey) is probably Thailand’s most infamous serial killer, responsible for the deaths of half a dozen young boys. He suffocated them and ate their hearts and livers as he believed the consumption of the organs gave him special powers.

If you want to visit the museum for yourself you can find it here:
2 Wanglung Road Khwaeng Siriraj,
Khet Bangkok Noi,
Krung Thep Maha Nakhon 10700,
 Thailand

Check if it's open or not before you go, because I went there once and it wasn't. Boo.

Drop dead bread:

At first glance you’d think that you’d walked in the house of a serial killer cannibal.
Severed heads are lined up in rows, disembodied arms and legs hang from meat hooks…don’t panic, though, as these creations are actually made from bread and are even edible.

The son of a baker in Thailand, a fine arts major named Kittiwat, creates the morbid pastries as a way to bring customers to his family’s business in the countryside.

UFO Kao Kala, The Thai UFO group:

Last month I bumped into an acquaintance of mine while at a bar with a couple of friends. He had been carrying a calendar around the whole night and we eventually got curious enough to ask what it was.
Hesitantly, he handed it over, and we took a look. At first it looked like a regular Thai Buddhist calendar, until you noticed that it had meditating women with UFO’s hovering above them, grey aliens and even the silhouette of ET from the Spielberg blockbuster.
He told us that he had just returned from a trip to Nakhon Sawan where he had attended a UFO meeting.

Nakhon Sawan, or “the heavenly city” as the name translates into English, is a province North of Bangkok, Thailand, and home to the Kao Kala Mountain, one of Asia’s biggest UFO hot spots.
In 1998, Sargent major Cherd Chuensamnuan, previously a monk, claimed that he heard an alien voice talking to him as he meditated. Allegedly, the voice brought a warning, telling him that there would be a disaster that would annihilate half of the Earth’s population.

He contacted his daughter, Somjit Raepeth, by telephone and told her about his experience, however was met by skepticism. In retort, she said she’d only believe when she saw it with her own eyes. “Send them over next time you see them” she would add.
Later Somjit would receive a phone call that would shake the foundations of her belief system:
They’re coming over

It was dark outside, Somjit and her sisters walked out onto the porch and turned their eyes to the sky and together they witnessed their first UFO. They described it as a large spinning disk, with a large amber light at the center, encircled by smaller lights around the rim.

Cherd Chuensammuan and his daughters are not the only residents in the area to have made contact with extraterrestrial beings. Many people have claimed to witness eerily silent crafts covered in blinking lights and have witnessed darting lights in the sky.

The UFO Kao Kala group practices meditation in order to make contact with the beings. Some members meditate for up to three hours per day and often do not make contact for upwards of a year. Through regular meditation they finely tune themselves to become human radio’s ready to receive transmissions from extraterrestrials. These messages are usually sub-missions that tie in to the main goal of saving half the Earths populace from devastation.
Somjit claims that the aliens they are in contact with are from both Pluto and a planet named “Lokukatapakadikong” (Loku) which is in another solar system and three times the size of Earth where the aliens get around via “jumping spots” spaced around 5 meters apart. They consume one pill per day as the only food they eat, which is made from a plant on their planet.

Members are often found clad in white, meditating near a statue of Buddha sitting before a Nāga snake at the foot of a hill in area 145, which is said to conceal the gateway to an alien dimension.
The members are trained by Somjit, following the death of her father in 2000. Some members quit their jobs in order to dedicate their time to receiving the alien messages that they say forewarn them of an upcoming disaster.

Tragedy at Santika:

It had been the 1st of January 2009 for only 35 minutes when tourist and local party goers alike, bringing in the New Year at Club Santika in Watthana, Bangkok, found themselves engulfed in flame and fire.

Only half an hour earlier they had celebrated the count down and danced to the live band, a local covers band ominously name “burn”.
There was only one way out, the main entrance door, and tragically many were trampled in the stampede of customers rushing to escape. Some even passed out before they could attempt to do so, from inhaling the fumes from burning plastic.
Horrifying photos and videos from the scene show the charred bodies of those who were not lucky enough to get out, stretching towards the exit, frozen in a scream.
Although police blamed the lead singer of “Burn” for the incident, claiming that he was using fireworks indoors, witnesses claim that nothing other than sparklers were used that night.
Substandard safety regulations like lack of alternative exits and one only small fire extinguisher present for the entire building, as well as lax attitude to building regulations, contributed to the death toll.
66 people died as a result of the Santika club fire, and 222 were injured.
The letters from the sign on the front of the building were burned away, all but two, the letters “KA”, which, morbidly, is the word for “kill” in Thai.

The final wave:

Seattle native, Christian Pilet, a member of the ABWE, was doing relief work in Thailand after the 2004 tsunami devastated the Khao Lak tourist town of Thailand, when he found a damaged digital camera.
He discarded the camera but kept the memory card and uploaded the files to his computer.
After searching a missing persons website he recognized the couple as a Canadian couple, John and Jackie Knill, and upon return to the US drove from Seattle to Vancouver to hand over the memory card to the couples sons.
The last photo on the camera shows the wave just before it hits the beach.

Death do us part:

In 2012, Surin, Northern Thailand, 28 year old Chadil Deffy married his deceased girlfriend at a joint wedding / funeral ceremony.

The couple had been together for 10 years and planned to marry when Deffy completed his studies at university, but fate snatched away his girlfriend, 29 year old Sarinya Anne Kamsook, when she became involved in a car crash.

Although with swift medical help Sarinya could have survived, she died as a result of her injuries following a six hour wait at an already crowded intensive care unit.

Chadil Deffy documented the wedding and uploaded the photos to a facebook album titled “Corpse bride” as well as posting a video of the ceremony to youtube.

Satanic slayings in the land of smiles

(Images blurred for Gore. Violent content in article)

The lead vocalist and bass player of Thai metal band “Surrender of divinity” was only 36 years old when he was brutally stabbed to death in his own living room while his wife and child were upstairs.
Samong Traisattha, informally known as Avaejee, was murdered by Prakarn Harnphanbusakorn, who dropped by his house in Sai mai, Bangkok, under the pretense of silk screening some T shirts and having a couple of beers.
Samong’s wife left the room to put their child to bed and returned to a bloody murder scene. He had been stabbed a total of 30 times.

Self-proclaimed “Satanist”, Prakarn Harnphanbusakorn, who went by the Facebook username “maleficent.meditation”, posted an update on his page confessing to the crime, along with a gory photo of his handy work.
In a wall of text he confessed that the reasons he committed the murder weren’t relevant, as he was planning to commit suicide. However he did go on to elaborate that the reason for the slaying was because Samong wasn’t a real Satanist. Harnphanbusakorn claimed to have real faith in the Devil and admitted the he was going to kill 30-50 more people, but his plans were foiled by the police check points that had been set up around the city.
He described his actions in detail, commenting on how much better it is to kill with a knife than it is with a gun. Although the media reported that Harnphanbusakorn was a fan, he denied it and along with the comparison to the death of John Lennon, and claimed it was nothing of the sort and that he didn’t even like the band. He finished off the post by thanking those who had read it in its entirety, and said that he hoped to be with Satan soon.

Prakarn Harnphanbusakorn is currently in prison serving a 20 year sentence.

The Tourist from hell

(Image: Wikipedia)

John Martin Scripps, dubbed by the media as “The tourist from hell”, was an English-born spree killer executed in Singapore for his crimes in 1996.
Following the suicide of his father, Scripps began to have difficulties in school and eventually dropped out at the age of 15 and went on to work various jobs in order to raise funds for traveling.
He went on to murder three tourists while traveling between Thailand and Singapore in the mid 90’s.
He murdered a man by the name of Gerard Lowe in Singapore, as well as a woman named Shelia Demude and her son Darin in Thailand.

Scripps had a history of previous arrests on his record, rewarded to him as a result of the various burglaries he committed along with one count of indecent assault in the 70’s.
He was eventually imprisoned for three years in the 80’s while traveling in Mexico with a woman he had married, on account of similar crimes.
Only months before completing his sentence, he escaped only to burgle again and was sentenced to another three years, causing upset in his marriage.
His wife finally divorced him and remarried. However Scripps harassed her new husband upon his release.

Having done his time in prison and been released, Scripps officially changed his name to John Martin by deed poll.
He began running heroin for a syndicate between Asia and Europe in the late 80’s and was apprehended at Heathrow airport, where the arresting officers found he was carrying a key on him.
It was discovered that they key opened a deposit box in a bank in Singapore, and contained one million dollars’ worth of heroin. Scripps was once again put behind bars where he was sentenced to seven years. He escaped again, was caught, and true to form, escaped once more.

Scripps found himself locked up at Albany on the Isle of Wight where he learned the butchering skills that he would later use to dismember his victims.

After transferring to another prison, he escaped for the last time. His mother, having sold all of his possessions, handed over the money in order for Scripps to travel overseas to evade being arrested again. He applied for another passport, using the documents of another inmate named Simon James Davis, and ended up in Mexico again as John Martin, where he reported his passport missing to the British Embassy and got a replacement.

From there travelled to Singapore via San Francisco. The date was March 8th, 1995.
Despite the official report that Scripps murdered three people, it is speculated that murdered many more in the USA and Mexico.

His technique would be to act like a tourist, strike up conversations with other white tourists in airports or aboard planes, and follow them to their accommodation. He would stay in the same hotels and get himself into their rooms under on pretext or another and shock them with an electroshock weapon, before hitting them over the heads and dismembering in hotel bathrooms, using the butchering skills he had picked up in prison.

The motive was most likely money, as withdrawals for large sums of money on the victims credit cards were made after their murders.

Scripps murdered a South African man named Gerard Lowe in a hotel room they were sharing in Singapore. Posing as a tourist at the airport and using an assumed name, Scripps suggested they share a hotel room and Lowe agreed. They rented room 1511 at the River view hotel.

Later, Scripps went to the reception desk and asked the receptionist to erase Lowe’s name, claiming that he had kicked him out as he found out Lowe was a homosexual.

Two days later the dismembered limbs of Gerard Lowe washed up at Clifford Pier, including his thighs and torso. His head and arms, however, were never located.

A couple of days later, on the 15th, Scripps took a flight to Thailand, where he made the acquaintance of mother and son Sheila and Darin Damude. The three were seated in the same row and again checked in the same hotel, Nilly’s Marina Inn, overlooking Patpong beach. They check into rooms on the same floor, opposite each other, with Scripps in room 48 and the Damudes in 43.

The Damudes were never seen alive again following their breakfast the next morning.
Scripps informed the hotel that they had checked out already, and that he wanted to transfer to room 43 where he would pick up the bill.

(Image: murderpedia)

He took a flight back to Singapore on the 19th, the very same day the skulls of the mother and son were discovered. Other body parts were discovered over the following day’s most likely belonging to Sheila, but the remains of Darin were never recovered.

Many victims linked to Scripps remained unconfirmed. He is thought to have murdered people in London and Mexico as well as in the United States. Large withdrawals from the banks of the victims in Scripps name were made after their deaths and disappearances heavily indicating his responsibility.

Upon arrest the tourist from hell managed to smash a glass panel in the police interview room and attempted to take his life with a shard of the broken glass in fear of the death penalty.
The attempt was failed and he later recovered in hospital.
The investigators found the passports of the victims in Scripps possession, each one with a passport photograph of him affixed to it. They also recovered the stolen credit cards along with a haul of weapons including the electroshock device, a hammer, a can of mace and knives.

Found evidence.

Scripps denied the murders during his trial. He claimed to have killed Lowe in self-defense while fighting off the homosexual advances and that a friend helped him dispose of the body.
He went to say that he could not name this friend for fear of the safety of his family back in England.
He claimed never to have met the Damudes and that the same friend whom could not be named, had in fact murdered them and then given the credit cards, passports and weapons to Scripps.

He was sentenced to death by hanging.

Holiday in Cambodia:

The Dead Kennedys are an American hardcore punk rock band from San Francisco.
In May 1980 they released a single called "Holiday in Cambodia".
The black and white image that they used  as the artwork depicts the hanged body of a second year student from Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, being beaten with a metal folding chair by a right wing onlooker as a crowd cheers on and smiles.

The Holiday in Cambodia single was a satirical view on the attitude of a well off, self righteous, blissfully ignorant, American youth, with a false sense of empathy and compassion for third world countries under brutal regimes, much like that of Khmer regime of Cambodia during the 1970's.

The picture was taken by American born photographer Neal Hirsh Ulevich, in Bangkok, during the Thammasat University massacre of October 1976.

The Thammasat University Massacre, or Massacre of 6 October 1976 was an attack on students and protesters that occurred on the campus of Thammasat University and at Sanam Luang in Bangkok. Students from various universities were demonstrating against the return to Thailand of Field Marshal Thanom Kittikachorn, a former military ruler.

Ulevich shot the image and quickly returned to his office to develop the negatives and send them to Tokyo by telegram, as the Thai government had ordered all photographers and journalists to give up their film.

(Image: Neal Ulevich)

He went on to win the pulitzer prize for the picture in 1977, but until this day the prize winning  picture has not been printed in any Thai publications. The award was mentioned in an English language newspaper “The Bangkok post”, however the picture failed to accompany the text only report.

The official body count was reported as 43 but allegedly the number of those dead was tragically higher.
There was said to have been hundreds of victims and a quick google will pull up other pictures of the event.

Here is an exert from the wikipedia page on the event, as a bit of an insight to the happenings that day:

"In the chaos of the attack, students were shot and hanged, pulled through gates and beaten, dragged across city streets, and bludgeoned with sticks and poles. A few escaped. More than three thousand were rounded up by police, stripped to their waists, and told to lie on their stomachs and await incarceration......kicking, clubbing, shooting, lynching. Youths hurled themselves into the river to keep from being shot. Then the blazing finale as a heap of gasoline-soaked bodies was set afire.About a thousand demonstrators were taken prisoner and humiliated by being stripped to the waistmade to crawl or kicked.Female students allegedly were raped, alive and dead, by police and Red Gaurs....By evening, the democracy was overthrown and martial law was enforced. Many of the bodies were cremated en masse. The true count of those who died will likely never be known.”Even today, the Thammasat University massacre is seldom mentioned."

The Death of David Carradine and the haunted closet:

Since I wrote my last post, I’ve been thinking about Bangkok related weirdness that I can share with you guys.

I know, I know, you’re thinking it’s not exactly difficult to find dodgy stories from the land of smiles, but finding something worth writing about with a bit of a back story and a mystery element isn’t so easy to track down.

So there’s a seemingly endless and fresh supply of daily tales of terror, complete with gory crime scene investigation photos, printed every morning in the tabloids in south East Asia.
But I don't want to write about those.
I do, however, want to write about this little snippet of spooky that I found whilst on my searches today. I found an older article about the death of American actor and martial artist David Carradine.

Whilst on location, filming his latest movie titled “Stretch” on June 4th 2009, he was found dead in closet in his room, in a hotel by the name of "Swissôtel Nai Lert Park Hotel" in central Bangkok, Thailand.
His hands were tied above his head and around the closets hanger rail.
Apparently he also had a cord wrapped around genitals, leading people to believe that his death was accidental and due to an Erotic asphyxiation session gone wrong.
Two of his former wives confirmed that Carradine did have an interest in sexual self-bondage, so the story seemed to add up.
Case closed, right?

Weirdly, while researching the article for any elements of foul play or mystery, I found a few articles mentioning Carradine’s appearance on a series called “Celebrity ghost stories” some months prior to his death, where he talked of being haunted by a ghost in a closet.
Apparently it was the ghost was of his wife’s ex-husband, who he thought hung out in the closet where some of his things were still kept.
“The closet doors wound swing open and shut” He said.

How creepy is that?
Coincidences happen all of the time, of course, but seriously, a closet ghost and then a closet related death only a few months later?
You couldn’t even write this stuff.

Siriraj Hospital and the tale of Si-Oui :

You might need to break out a Chang beer for this one.

For those of holidaying in the land of smiles, how about a nice day out to the Siriraj medical museums pathological and forensic exhibit?

The Siriraj Medical Museum in Bangkok, Thailand, for the layman, is a gruesomely fascinating formaldehyde pickled nightmare world, including a gallery of suicide, an exhibit of Siamese twins in jars, forensic evidence from crimes, cadavers cut in half and heads in jars. Although extremely valuable and educational for students in the medical field, it is not for the squeamish.

Siriraj hospital is home to preserved body of Chinese immigrant and serial child killer cannibal “Si-oui” (or Si Ouey) in a big glass display box.

Si-oui is probably Thailand’s most famous serial killer, responsible for the deaths of half a dozen young boys. He suffocated them and ate their hearts and livers as he believed the consumption of the organs gave him powers.

There is even a movie about him, here’s the trailer:

You're not allowed to take photos in the museum, so these are just a couple i found online.

As you can see on the map, you'll have to cross the river from this one. But it's not so difficult to find.

That's all for this one folks.
Hope I didn’t ruin your Pad Thai.
